Air conditioning doesn’t care whether you rent or own your home—it’s always expensive. If you’ve been debating whether to skyrocket your electricity bills with air conditioning use or melt into your floor, you’re not alone.
To help you stay cool this summer without breaking the bank, we’ve compiled a list with plenty of low-cost, high reward AC alternatives:
- Hide Out
Sun-worshiping isn’t for everyone. If you prefer to stay indoors, keep your windows closed and your blinds drawn to prevent heat from entering. For outside, pop open an umbrella or find refuge under a leafy tree—studies have shown that umbrella shade not only feels up to 10-15 degrees cooler, it’s also one of the best ways to avoid sunburns or overexposure.
- Stay Hydrated
Hot temperatures and sun exposure often mean more sweat. Be sure to refuel your body with plenty of water to avoid fatigue and dehydration. Keep cool water nearby for your pets, too!
- Swap Your Sheets
If the heat keeps you up at night, consider changing your sheets to linen or thin cotton. Specialized cooling sheets can be a great option, but standard linen is known for its breathability and relief for hot sleepers.
- Get With the Program
Make the most of your air conditioning with a programmable thermostat. Incremental cooling can significantly reduce your electricity bill while keeping your home comfortable when you need it most.
- DIY It
Pull out your handheld fans, homemade cooling sprays, or sprint through the sprinkler. Get creative! You’re never too old to dip your feet in a kiddie pool.
Finally, remember that heat waves are temporary. Enjoy the warmer weather if you can, but if not, know that Christmas is only six months away (yeah, we went there).
